Recipe for Honeydome Cookies from Kuremiyado
If you’ve read Aoyama Michiko’s book What You Are Looking For Is in the Library, beautifully translated by Alison Watts, you might also be wanting to get your own tin of Honeydome cookies. They are notoriously hard to find despite their ubiquity at the Hatori Community House Library. My dear friend Aya in Omika has shared some honeydome tips and this recipe.
Honeydomes are cookies but they need to be cooked in molds such as a tart pan or a mini muffin pan. These are hard to find especially in a half-moon shape. I’d recommend something made for Madelines, there are antique versions that are round and patterned.
Next you’ll need to make the cookies. At this point you might be tempted to just order them online but, alas, they don’t ship anywhere outside of Hatori, which is only three square blocks. I said ship but actually they only hand deliver them so unless you live in walking distance from the Community House you are going to be making these yourself. Think butter. Lots of butter.
Ingredients:
4 large eggs
½ teaspoon salt
⅔ cup sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla
Zest from one lemon
Two sticks unsalted butter – 10 tablespoons melted for the batter and the rest to butter the tins
1 cup all purpose flour, plus more for dusting the tins
- Beat eggs and salt together in a mixer on high. Add sugar and mix until combined. This will be bright yellow almost glowing color – which is where the honey in honeydome comes from. Add the vanilla and lemon zest.
- Gently stir in the melted (but cooled) butter. Add the flour. Stir just enough so that it’s combined.
- Put this in the refrigerator (or on the back porch if it’s winter) and let it chill for 30 minutes.
- Butter up the tins then dust them with flour. Spoon the batter into the tins leaving room for the cookies to rise.
- Bake at 350 degrees fahrenheit for 13 minutes until a perfect golden honey color.
- After they’ve cooled, store them in a cookie tin and share with friends or family.
Let me know how it goes. Thanks to Aya and Teneal for their help and tips! If you want an even more decadent dessert than Honeydome cookies, look here.
